Use the language requested in the vacancy. If the instructions do not specify one, the advert's language is a useful starting point; ask the employer when possible. Preparing both Arabic and English versions can help you respond, but sending a document with every sentence repeated in both languages is not always the clearest choice.
Choose the right version for this application
Situation | Practical response |
|---|---|
The advert requests an English CV | Submit the English version and check the required file format. |
The advert requests an Arabic CV | Submit the Arabic version, preserving official product names and qualifications. |
Both languages are requested | Follow the requested format; if none is given, ask whether separate files are preferred. |
No language is specified | Use the advert's language as a starting point and clarify where possible. |
These are application choices, not claims that every Libyan employer or sector uses the same language. An English advert does not by itself prove that all work will be in English. Ask which languages are needed for reports, clients and internal communication.
Translate the meaning without upgrading the experience
Create one factual record of employers, titles, dates, education and projects, then use it to check both versions. Keep official names and certificate titles where possible. Add a plain explanation if a title will be unfamiliar, rather than replacing it with a more senior qualification.
Arabic wording | English wording with the same meaning |
|---|---|
متدرب في قسم الحسابات | Accounting intern |
مشروع جامعي لتحليل بيانات المبيعات | University project analysing sales data |
أعددت تقارير شهرية تحت إشراف المحاسب | Prepared monthly reports under the accountant's supervision |
الإنجليزية: أستطيع قراءة الوثائق الفنية، وأعمل على تحسين المحادثة | English: able to read technical documentation; improving spoken communication |
These examples are illustrative. “Intern” should not become “Accountant”, and “supported a project” should not become “managed a department”. Do not label a language level certified unless you hold the stated certification. A precise description of what you can do is more useful than an unsupported “fluent”.
Review formatting in each language
Arabic needs a readable right-to-left layout; English needs left-to-right reading order. Check mixed items such as email addresses, phone numbers, dates and software names after export. Use Latin digits consistently, for example 2024–2026, and ensure that the two versions give the same dates.
A single-column layout can make review easier. Copy text from the final file into a plain-text editor to inspect its reading order, then open it on a phone. See the CV and ATS guide for why readable formatting matters. This test cannot establish compatibility with every recruitment system.
Use AI translation as a draft
Check each job title, technical term, qualification and verb against the original facts. Ask a competent speaker to review important wording when possible. Pay particular attention to negation: “assisted with” and “responsible for” are different claims. Remove any achievement that the translation added.
The Europass CV guide (Opens in a new tab) supports creating tailored CV versions and making relevant information easy to understand. It does not establish a preferred language for Libya. On jobs.ly, review any additional-language CV draft before using it; available AI assistance does not certify translation accuracy.
Frequently asked questions
Should I send both versions every time?
Follow the employer's instructions. If only one file is requested, use the relevant version unless the employer asks otherwise. Keep the second version ready rather than adding unnecessary attachments.
Can I translate a qualification into an equivalent foreign degree?
Translate or explain its title accurately. Do not assert official equivalence unless an authorized body has established it. Keep the institution and award date consistent.
Can English wording make up for limited English ability?
No. Your CV should describe your current ability honestly. Prepare to discuss your experience in the language required for the role.
